Promoting the degradation of organic micropollutants in tertiary moving bed biofilm reactors by controlling growth and redox conditions

A novel process configuration was designed to increase biofilm growth in tertiary moving bed reactors (MBBRs) by providing additional substrate from primary treated wastewater a sidestream reactor under different redox conditions order improve micropollutant removal MBBRs with low availability. This recirculating MBBR operated on pilot scale for 13 months, and systematic seen the biomass concentration degradation rates, compared without substrate. The rates per unit carrier surface area increased of ten times, certain micropollutants, such as atenolol, metoprolol, trimethoprim roxithromycin, 20–60 times. Aerobic were critical maintaining high rates. With innovative configurations it may be possible biological organic micropollutants wastewater. It is suggested that normalized area, favor concentration, this reflects diffusion limitations oxygen, will facilitate comparison systems.
